What additional accessories do I need to get started with steam bending?
The Flexmakr steam box comes fully assembled along with the necessary hardware fittings included in the package. All you need is a compatible electric steam source like a wallpaper steamer to connect to your Flexmakr steam box. Depending on the length of the wood pieces you plan to bend, you may also need to buy additional extension modules to increase the length of your Flexmakr steam box.
What type of steam source works with the Flexmakr steam box?
A steam source, like a wallpaper steamer with 1500W to 2000W power and 60-120 minutes run-time is sufficient for most use-cases. Make sure the steamer has a female thread that can connect to the 1/4in BSP stainless-steel adapter provided with the Flexmakr steam box. We recommend the Earlex SS77USSG steamer which is built for this purpose.
How does Flexmakr steam box compare to a DIY steam box I could build on my own?
DIY steam boxes made from PVC or plywood take hours to build, deteriorate rapidly from high temperature steam, are difficult to store due to being bulky and their length cannot be customized to suit different project sizes.
The patent-pending Flexmakr steam box is a ready-to-use solution with a modular design that allows easily customizable steam box length, it can be folded down for easy storage and is made from highly durable industrial-grade materials.
Does the Flexmakr steam box need assembly before I can use it?
The Flexmakr steam box comes pre-assembled from factory so you can get right into bending wood. All you need to do is connect your steam source and outlet hose (optional) using the SS304 adapters provided in the package. This save hours of your time, so you can focus on enjoying your craft - not on assembling equipment.
Why use steam bending and not laminations to make curves?
Steam bent parts outperform bent laminations when you need continuous, unbroken grain patterns, higher structural strength along the curve, and fast production with zero material waste. But steam bending as a process was cumbersome and time-consuming in the past, this is no longer the case with modern steam bending equipment by Flexmakr.
Does a steam box need thick insulation to retain heat?
A steam box requires a continuous, high flow of steam to heat the wood and soften the lignin. The heat being lost through the steam box walls is very low compared to the additional thermal energy being added by the steam source. Adding thick insulation for heat retention is an overkill and is not necessary.
What is the advantage of adjustable steam box length?

You can easily add modules to your existing steam box to increase its length if a future project requires bending longer stock.
